WebResults Guide to Web Site Planning: Implementation

The desired result of Web planning is not to come up with a plan, but to establish a Web site and presence on the Web that will help you achieve your organizational objectives.

Implementation is what moves you from the Plan to Web results.

Unfortunately, because there are complex technical issues involved, implementation can be the hardest part of developing a Web site.

Following are some suggested steps for getting up and running that try to make it as clear and simple as possible:

1. Work through the Web planning process and define a Web Plan.

2. Circulate the Plan for feedback to develop consensus and commitment to it, as well as obtain the necessary approvals and resources.

3. Decide whether you will design and develop your Web site internally or externally.

4. If externally, hire a Web site designer, who should be able to help you with the rest of the process.

5. Decide whether to host your Web site internally (i.e., set up your own Web server, which requires significant technical expertise, and speedy Internet connection) or externally (with a Web hosting service)

6. If hosting internally, set up your server.

7. If hosting externally, select a Web host.
